2007.11 A1GP Malaysia : 23rd - 25th November 2007
Sepang International Circuit, Malaysia

Pole sitter and Sprint race winner A1 Team Switzerland took its second win of the day in this afternoon’s incident-packed Feature race at Sepang in scorching weather conditions, moving the team into the championship lead by 10 points.

Jani was joined on the podium by Brazilian rookie Sergio Jimenez, who started the race sixth and led for 15 laps, in second position and French driver Loic Duval in third.

Jani made a perfect getaway in the Swiss car as Great Britain’s Oliver Jarvis held second off the grid and further down the pack five cars tangled going into turn one. Jani pulled out a 2.5-second advantage by the end of lap one as third and fourth-placed France and Brazil concentrated on making their way past GBR, demoting Jarvis to fourth.

After a second lap tussle for tenth position, New Zealand’s Jonny Reid and local hero Malaysia’s Alex Yoong were forced to pit for repairs, rejoining the action at the back of the field. On lap five German rookie Michael Ammermuller snatched fifth from Ireland’s Adam Carroll, who had made another superb start to make up two places from seventh on the grid.

Two laps later eighth-placed South Africa’s Adrian Zaugg made a mistake going into turn seven and spun off into the gravel before returning ‘Vulindlela’ to the track, forcing Canada’s Robert Wickens to run wide to avoid him.

The incident brought out the safety car and as the first pit stop window opened on lap eight, 20 of the 22 nations decided to pit under yellow. The crowds watched in amazement as the pack was then held at the end of pit lane for an unusual standing start as they waited to rejoin behind the safety car.

Brazil’s Jimenez took the lead and pulled away as Switzerland, GBR and France went side-by-side in a battle for second place, Jani taking position followed by Duval and Jarvis in third and fourth place.

By lap 16 the order had settled behind the top four to Germany, Netherlands, India and China, followed by Mexico and Ireland in ninth and tenth. Race leader Jimenez did an incredible job to hold off the Swiss driver who was all over the back of the Brazilian car while Germany’s Ammermuller received a drive-through penalty for hitting GBR when he tried an ambitious move on Jarvis at turn two on lap 19.

The second pit stop window opened on lap 22 and Brazil decided to stay out while Switzerland pitted from second on lap 23. Jimenez pitted one lap later and rejoined the action behind Jani, as the Swiss driver regained the lead and started to pull away once again. GBR continued to endure a difficult race as the team struggled with a sticking wheel nut in their second stop on lap 24 and then received a drive through penalty three laps later for speeding in the pit lane.

With seven laps remaining, Ammermuller launched the German car ambitiously into turn two for the third time this weekend, taking out the Czech Republic’s Erik Janis on his way.

Meanwhile at the front of the pack, Jani continued to pull away from Jimenez and went on to cross the line in first position, giving the Swiss team a perfect end to the weekend with its first double victory and Feature race win. Jimenez, who has been improving all weekend, brought the Brazilian car home in second place, scoring the nation’s first podium finish since round four of season one. Third place went to Duval in the French car, promoting the team to second in the championship while GBR’s Jarvis crossed the line a well-earned fourth.

A1 Team China’s CongFu Cheng put in a strong performance to finish fifth, having started from eighth on the grid while India’s Narain Karthikeyan crossed the line sixth. Ireland’s Adam Carroll finished seventh while the final three point-scoring positions were taken by New Zealand, Australia and Great Britain, as Jarvis snatched tenth from USA in the closing seconds of the race.

Jani was clearly delighted to take Switzerland’s first Feature race win and can’t wait to get back on track at the next round in China.

Jani said: ‘I mean how many times have I lead a Feature race when something happened in the last lap, the pit stop messed up everything, it was just a horrible dream so far of a Feature race for us. And now finally we got that win and the first time in the championship lead for the A1GP for Switzerland, so it’s really great and I’m really looking forward to Zhuhai.’

Jimenez was proud for giving Brazil its first podium for 43 races.

2007.11 The All-New Honda Stream Launch : Kuala Lumpur, 21 November 2007 – The long-awaited All-New Honda Stream, the second generation of the stylish sporty 7-seater MPV (Multi-Purpose Vehicle) has finally arrived on Malaysian shores. The modern and dynamic looking new Stream, which was first introduced in Japan more than a year ago, was officially launched here today, making it available at all of authorized Honda dealers nationwide.

In his speech at the launch ceremony, Honda Malaysia Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer Mr. Atsushi Fujimoto thanked loyal customers for their interest in and patience for the arrival of the second-generation Stream. He also announced that all authorized Honda dealers will be offering the brand new Stream with more value packed in for customers.

“At Honda, we pride ourselves in providing our customers with products and services of the highest quality at reasonable prices,” said Mr. Fujimoto. “As such, customers are assured of the best quality and value when they purchase the All-New Stream from authorized Honda dealers which come with a 3-year warranty and free maintenance for the first six months. Customers who purchase from authorized Honda dealers are also entitled to a 15% off on All-New Stream parts throughout the sales period. Besides, Modulo accessories will be made available at all authorized Honda dealers.”

Mr. Fujimoto also welcomed customers to visit any one of their 53 authorized Honda dealers for information and assistance on the All-New Honda Stream. “50 of our authorized Honda dealers are 3S Centers, which provide sales, service and spare parts facilities. All of our authorized Honda dealers are equipped with the most qualified sales personnel and technicians for our products,” stressed Mr. Fujimoto.

Honda Stream was first developed to achieve a 7-seater value concept based on three themes: a design anticipating the changing needs and style of the 21st century; sporty performance for the individual; and an innovative approach to interior space, comfort and refinement.

The latest generation Stream re-offers the same 7-seater concept with 2 bonuses -- a lower center of gravity with optimized flat floor design that heightens its sporty performance; and an even more dynamic exterior that accentuates its stylishness, giving customers the desired improvements in both style and performance without compromising on its functionality as a family car.

As such, the brand new Stream appeals to those who appreciate a young, urban and classy image, but need the practicality of a MPV. The newly improved features of All-New Stream are tailored to change customers’ perception of the Honda Stream from a conventional MPV to a stylish and versatile “7-seater for two” that suits the lifestyle of young and urban individuals today who enjoy the fun of driving.

The All-New Stream’s newly developed 1.8-liter i-VTEC engine delivers a powerful and smooth driving performance. It boasts a series of improvement from the previous generation, including a lowered overall height by 45mm, and a unique technology which Honda has mastered in perfection - low centre of gravity with optimized flat floor design, complemented by the front Macpherson Strut suspension with a new side cancellation spring which improves flat riding comfort.

The optimized flat floor design creates a lower centre of gravity, thereby giving the driver a more sophisticated handling and stable drive. The high-precision body uses strong, lightweight, high-tensile steel which enhances the vehicle’s rigidity, and reduces the vehicle’s weight by 10kg.

Interior wise, the All-New Stream breathes relaxation and quality. The side sill has been redesigned to attain an extra 20mm of width for passengers in the first and second rows. The use of a slim fuel tank permits a lower floor in the third row, while the reduced cross section in the rear frame results in more width. The floor tunnel has also been eliminated for a significant gain in leg room.

As of September 2007, close to 75,100 units of the All-New Honda Stream have been sold in Japan alone in the short year since its launch in Japan. The stylish and family-friendly MPV has also accumulated a string of award accolades in the region, with the latest being Japan Car of the Year – Best Value; The Best Recreational Vehicle (Car and Driver Magazine, Hong Kong); Car of The Year 2006, Silver Prize (Car and Driver Magazine, Hong Kong); and Ten Best Car of the Year 2006 (Automobile Magazine, Hong Kong).

The All-New Honda Stream 1.8-liter i-VTEC is currently available in four color variants at all authorized Honda dealers: Nighthawk Black Pearl, Premium White Pearl, Royal Blue Pearl and Alabaster Silver Metallic.

2007.08 Merdeka Millennium Endurance : 25th August 2007
Sepang International Circuit, Malaysia

While a proposal to turn Sepang’s prestigious Merdeka Millennium Endurance into a 24-hour race fast gaining momentum, racing legend Hans Joachim Stuck believes the race should remain as it is and instead build further as a prominent 12-hour international endurance race.

“Making the MME a 12 hour race will make it just another LeMans, Nurburgring or even Dubai 24-hour race. It will just be another 24-hour race. Nothing more … they should keep it as 12-hour race. It’s unique and exciting,” said Stuck, who had a heartbreaking debut at Sepang after his Petronas Syntium Team was forced to retire from the front with just 55 minutes before the checkered flag.

Twice overall winner in LeMans and three times at the Nurburgring 24Hours Endurance Race, Stuck, who partnered his son Johannes and Malaysian Fariqe Hairuman, said the endurance race in Sepang provided plenty of excitement for the drivers and fans as a 12-hour race.

“It’s half sprint and half endurance … it’s a good racing period, it’s a perfect combination … 12 hours is just nice,” Stuck said, adding that at the moment, there was only one international 12-hour endurance race in Sebring, Florida and it is commanding huge interest among the world class participants.

“Sepang should remain as a 12 hour race … at least for this side of the world,” says Stuck, who said that he would love to come back again next year to compete in the MME. The event was introduced by Sepang International Circuit (SIC) at the turn of the millennium to promote Sepang as an international hub for motorsports activities ans as part of the National Day celebrations.

“If you ask me, I really love this track. The track has everything … fast corners, challenging turns and it is very demanding. I am sure other foreign drivers that had never competed here would love to race in Sepang as well,” said Stuck, who partnered his son Johannes and Malaysian Fariqe Hairuman, completing 275 laps before retiring due to electrical problems to their BMW Z4M Coupe race car.

Despite that massive number of laps covered and even surpassing last year’s total laps of 271 by overall winners Proton R3 Motorsports, the team were classified as DNF (did not finish) as the rules requires competitors to take the checkered flag to have their results classified by the race officials.

It was even more devastated for Team LKM Racing with drivers Siu Tit Lung, Siu Yuk Lung and Keita Sawa when their Porsche 911 stalled with just 200 meters short of checkered flag as the car caught fire before being immediately put off by the marshals. Covering 268 laps, the team could have taken third place in Class O.

As the race enters its eighth edition this year, SIC Chairman Datuk Mokhzani Tun Dr Mahathir had said that it was time for the event to progress to its second phase, and that making it as a 24Hours race like LeMans, Nurburgring and Bahrain was one of things being considered.

There was widespread discussion at the paddock among the drivers and teams over the proposal during the race last weekend with their opinion divided, though most of them were thrilled with the prospect of racing for a full day around the 5.543-km challenging Sepang Circuit.

Commenting on the proposal, Class A winner Eddie Lew said that he was looking forward to compete in a 24-hours race; but stressed that his participation would entirely be decided by his Honda Malaysia Racing Team.

“As a driver, I would love to compete in a 24 hour race to actually test myself a driver. It would be very interesting,” said Eddie, who won his fourth Class A winner trophy – this time with Japan’s Super GT drivers Hiroki Katoh and Shinya Hosokawa.

The winning Class B trio from Type R Racing – Kek Tean Kang, Wong Yew Choong and Soh Kee Koon – said that they were ready to continue competing in the MME irrespective of the number of hours.

“We have been here from the first race and we will be here all the way to support this event. Every driver and every team in Malaysia loves this event. This is the biggest race in Asia and we as Malaysians, will always support this event,” said Tek, who also won the Class C in 2004.

Class C winner Harry Chai of JC Racing Team, however, was cautious in his comments, saying that a 24-hour race would incur more expenses for the local teams and that it could deny many local drivers like himself from continue competing in the MME.

“We must study everything first … we must consider the local drivers who want to compete in the MME,” said Harry, who was installed as the winner of Class C for cars below 1600cc with after the partnership of Kenny Lee, Sherwood and Chris o’Shannessy was disqualified.

Of 77 cars flagged off by Deputy Youth and Sports Minister Datuk Liow Tiong Lai, only 42 cars were classified with the remaining cars either being disqualified or failing to finish.

Imagine if it was a 24hour race.

2007.08 Honda MME Party : 22nd August 2007
Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia

Honda Malaysia today threw a party to unveil their 2007 Merdeka Millennium Endurance (MME) race cars, Car 26 and Car 27 as well as to introduce the Honda Malaysia Racing Team (HMRT) members and line up of six drivers. 2007 MME’s Car 26 is a Civic Type R locally built at Honda’s Malacca plant, while Car 27 is a Civic Type R built in Japan.

At MME 2006, HMRT experienced a bittersweet victory when Car 27 took home the Class A title while Car 26 met with an unforeseen accident which caused major damages to the car. But the HMRT team managed to repair the car which then went on to finish the race in 8th position in Class A.

For MME 2007, HMRT’s spirit is “The Challenge Within”, and the team has decided to challenge itself to build a Civic Type R locally and bring it back to the tracks. After 6 months of challenge, sweat and hard work, the team unveiled the new Car 26 at the party. The HMRT team, who is now fully local, displayed true determination and Challenging Spirit in building Car 26 for MME 2007.

In his speech during the party, HMRT Team Principal who is also Honda Malaysia Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer Mr. Atsushi Fujimoto commended the team, “We are indeed very proud of the HMRT team. Preparations for this year’s race were even more grueling and rigorous as the bar has been raised and expectations are higher than before. Everyone did their best and the whole team is truly dedicated and passionate in taking on the challenge. They have learned so well from last year’s experience and from the Japanese counterparts that they are now a fully local and independent team this year! Through the knowledge gained, HMRT members were able to build Car 26 to what we see today.”

“Honda Malaysia continues to put our resources and provide fullest support for HMRT in MME 2007. Honda’s DNA and racing heritage challenges us to compete at the highest level of motorsports technology. At the same time, endurance tests such as MME provide us with the opportunity to continuously improve on the quality of our products,” added Mr Fujimoto.

One of the HMRT members, 27-year old Irwan bin Ab. Hamid who works in Facilities Department at Honda's manufacturing plant in Melaka said, "This is my first time joining HMRT and the reason I did it this year was because I noticed that one of my colleagues can handle his daily responsibilities better after joining HMRT last year and this was in addition to his involvement in HMRT. I wanted to challenge myself to be able to do the same.”

While Car 26 was built locally by HMRT in Honda’s Malacca Plant, Car 27 is a Civic Type R from Japan, specially built by the MUGEN team.

Mr Fujimoto added that Honda Malaysia sent 3 HMRT members to Japan for a 3-week stint to learn from the MUGEN team in the building of Car 27, as part of the training and development of their local talents.

Irwan also shares about his stint in Japan to help build Car 27, “I was one of the fortunate HMRT members selected to undergo training in Japan where I joint a team of people who are experts in building racecars. It was a dream come true for me. They thought me many new skills, and the true meaning of teamwork and team spirit. In the three weeks we were there, we worked together to build a complete racecar from just an empty frame. When we encountered a problem, they taught us to never give up and instead think of creative ways to solve it. “

He said that the experience really opened his eyes and now he approaches his daily responsibilities differently.
The drivers for this year are once again drawn from both Japan and Malaysia. Two new drivers to the team, Mr Aaron Lim and En Fahrizal Hasan, will join four returning drivers, Mr Eddie Lew Kar Wai, Mr Reuben Wong, Mr Hiroki Katoh and Mr Shinya Hosokawa.

Having rose to the challenges, with race cars that are in excellent performance condition, experienced drivers and supportive management, the overall championship trophy might just be HMRT’s this MME 2007.

Racing and motor sports is deeply rooted in Honda’s DNA. It is Honda’s reason to exist. Honda’s Challenging Spirit and racing heritage will ensure that HMRT will go all out in embracing the MME 2007 challenge.

Honda will continue to pursue the ultimate potential of motorsports and share its excitement with Malaysians.

2007.07 Grass Racing Autocross Championship Round 2 : Grass Racing Autocross Championship Round 2
15th July 2007
Shah Alam Stadium Car Park, Malaysia

Grass Racing Autosports more commonly known as GRA ran their 2nd Autocross Round in Shah Alam Car Park in the wet! Rain did not dampen the spirit of the drivers. The event sponsored by tire makers BFGoodrich Tires, proved that being a rain soak day adds not only more stylish sideways driving but also provided more entertainment for the spectators. It was a cool fun wet day for everyone.

A total of 100 cars competed in the 2nd Round of the GRA Autocross Championship. Sponsored by BFGoodrich Tires along with partners Red Line Oil, Meguiar’s and Arospeed, the clouds over the car park created more hype than expected. Clerk of the Course, Ian Khong changed the layout to slow down the cars after the Pro-Grass drivers voted for a wet race!

The event this time had the Grass Class running in the morning session as usual. More than 50% of the entries this round was totally new to the sport of autocrossing. Kenneth Chiew in a Proton Wira 1.3 emerged 1st in his class. It has been a long time since a non-Kelisa has taken top spot. Another outstanding performance was Hock in a Honda EF taking the 1600cc class. Fighting for the 1800cc class of Class C was Jason Foo and Dennis Woo, with Jason winning by a mere 0.41 seconds. In Class D, Kim in a Toyota MRS was 1st with Chiew in 2nd piloting a Smart Roadster and Timothy in a Toyota Camry 2.2GX (A) was 3rd. In the Series Production Class for Automatic Cars below 1600cc, William driving a one year old Suzuki Swift took top spot followed closely by Kenny in a Proton Satria Neo and Timothy in a borrowed Toyota Corolla 1.6 SEG. In the faster Grass Class for cars beyond 2501cc, Mike in a Mitsubishi Evo7 emerged 1st, with Cheng in a Toyota SEG Supercharged coming in 2nd. Seasoned rally co-driver Gary in a BMW 328i managed a 3rd this time around.

The afternoon session would possibly be written in history books. No organizer has ever conducted a full wet race from start to finish for an entire class in the history of autocrossing. Well for GRA, the heavens must have been smiling as it rained all afternoon. Some drivers were caught with dry tires and had to struggle to find grip.

The Pro-Grass drivers started in the order of their finish in Round 1, thus Ivan was in car No.1 without the entry of the Lotus team. Ivan running with BFGoodrich Tires, was trailing Julian from Team Redline for nearly then entire race. It was a really close battle amongst the both of them. In the last and final run, Ivan managed to clock the fastest run of the day and took 1st Overall position from Julian relegating him to 2nd. Mickey in his Toyota MR2 was 3rd Overall.

In the 1300cc Pro-Grass Category, William emerged as class winner. Round 1 winner Chan Y.K could only manage a 3rd in this round. For the 1600cc class, Clement in a Honda EK4 took top spot, a surprising win over Galen in 2nd and Jason in 3rd. In the 1600cc-2000cc, Julian took 1st with Soo and Gareth in 2nd and 3rd respectively. In the Class OD, cars beyond 2000cc, Ivan in his Subaru Impreza took 1st, with Mickey in an MR2 in 2nd and Mike in an Evo7 in 3rd.

Seven ladies participated in GRA Round 2, and for the Fastest Lady of the day, the trophy went to Kylie in a Honda Civic. Team G won the team award with Andy, Kenneth and Nigel setting the fastest combined total time.

“ BFGoodrich Tires has always advocated good controlled fun and the rain possibly gave us the best opportunity today, explains Mr. Ronald Sutardja General Manager of BFGoodrich Tires. The GRA community is very closely knitted and when we needed umbrellas for our marshals, the competitors donated theirs instantaneously, that’s what makes GRA special and different “, explains Jiannin, Organizer of GRA.

Mr. Howard Goh of Red Line Oil and Arospeed explains, “… we thought that the rain would reduce the number of spectators but amazingly more turned up, it was really good to see the spectators braving the rain throughout the afternoon”.

Mr. Johan Wong and Ms. Esther Lim from Meguiar’s said, “..having more car clubs in the GRA series added a different flavor to the event. It was good to see the entire car club coming to cheer their members in the race, this is what building communities is all about ”.

The race ended just around 5pm, with Ivan doing a figure 8 ‘doughnut’ special to the claps of the spectators. The BFGoodrich Tires, Red Line Oil & Meguiar’s racequeens were in action right after, with the rain finally stopping for GRA’s group photoshoot and cheer.

In conjunction with the 2007 Autobacs Super GT International Series at Sepang this weekend, Honda Malaysia introduced the 2007 line-up of NSX-GT racing teams to meet the media at a party in Kuala Lumpur.

The pre-race bash provided guests with a chance to get up close and personal with the drivers of teams Aguri, Dome, Epson Nakajima, Kunimitsu and Rolling Stone. In addition, party guests were feted to interactive games and activities where they can play with their favourite drivers and teams.

Another highlight was a special performance by the original GT Queens from Japan, which was expected to be a hit with guests and fans. Regarded as a key component to the Super GT Series, the GT Queens are hugely popular in Japan where they have strong following with their own brigade of fans and are considered as celebrities.

This year, the Honda NSX-GT Project is working in co-operation with M’TEC Co Ltd and Dome Co Ltd to field their racing teams. These teams benefit from the V6, 3.5liter NA (natural aspiration) engines which have been further refined, using the newly-developed chassis with improved stiffness and aerodynamic performance.

Honda NSX-GT Teams’ focus is set towards winning the GT championship. The Autobacs Racing team Aguri is managed by Aguri Suzuki and features drivers Daisuke Ito and Ralph Firman, widely-known as a strong competitor for the podium.
Also in the running are the Dome Racing Team, with drivers Ryo Michigami and Takashi Kogure managed by team manager Takuya Nakamura; the Epson Nakajima Racing team with drivers Loic Duval and Fabio Carbone managed by team manager Satoru Nakajima; Team Kunimitsu with drivers Dominik Schwagaer and Shinya Hasokawa managed by team manager Kunimitsu Takahashi; and The Rolling Stone Real Racing Team with drivers Katsutomo and Toshihiro Kaneishi, managed by team manager Hitoshi Iyoki.

Racing is Honda’s reason to exist. Being the largest manufacturer of engines as well as in the forefront of engine development, Honda draws from its racing DNA to compete at the highest level of motoring and racing technology.

Honda’s passion for racing stems from its rich heritage of involvement in motorsports. Its founder Mr. Soichiro Honda was a dreamer and a racer. His unabated passion for motor racing continues to fuel the company's dreams in a new millennium. As one journalist said of Soichiro Honda, "He went racing because he loved it; it was in his blood. And what made Honda successful was that it was a company led by engineers. . . ."

Being engineers and racers, Honda’s drive to overcome engineering challenges on the track inspires new heights of creativity in the company, dismissing traditional solutions in the quest for new and more efficient designs.

Whether it is on the racing track or the production of consumer products, Honda injects the same spirit of commitment in developing innovative products that continues to challenge, motivate and push the barriers of technological limits.

“We are honoured to be part of this exciting development in Malaysia. We are equally proud of the NSX-GT teams that will be racing at Sepang this weekend. We look forward to an exciting race and we are confident that the team will push the limits and overcome the challenges to give us exceptional results.” said Honda Malaysia’s Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer, Mr Atsushi Fujimoto. He added that Honda will continue to grow and participate in all levels of motorsports competition.

Honda’s overarching dedication to outdo itself and its deep-seated passion for racing and excellence continues to give it its reason to exist. And power its dreams for the future.

2007.06 Bridgestone Adrenalin Potenza Track Day : Bridgestone Adrenalin Potenza RE001 Track Day
11th June 2007
Sepang International Circuit, Malaysia

POTENZA is Bridgestone’s sports tyre range. More than 20 years ago, Porsche decided to fit POTENZA as original equipment, followed by Ferrari, Lamborghini, Aston Martin and other leading marques. This confirmed it as the tyre of choice for almost all super sports cars.

It is now the tyre chosen by leading drivers in many motor sports, including the current craze for drift competitions. And then our crowning achievement, of course, was the F1 POTENZA.

Today we introduce a completely new concept – a street version of the POTENZA.

We asked ourselves: what is truly essential for sporty driving? Is it a powerful engine? Suspension and high-grip tyres that can handle high-speed cornering? The courage of a driver who cares nothing for danger and is fearless at speed? Is a fast circuit lap time the same as a sporty drive?

Those moments when you suddenly think “I’m really enjoying this drive” – what causes them?

Our view is that simply driving fast is not the same as sporty driving. We see it as a certain kind of pleasure that you should be able to feel when driving any car at any speed.

The sensation you get of becoming one with your vehicle, when tyres and suspension faithfully transmit the feeling of the road directly to your hands on the wheel. The satisfaction you get from a car that responds to your every wish, moving just as you imagine.

This is the sensation, the sporty ride, that is the true pleasure of driving.

The most important thing is finding out what makes a motorist really want to drive for the sake of pleasure. It doesn’t matter what car they drive. With our new tyre and with that desire, they can now enjoy all the pleasure of sports driving.

That’s the philosophy behind the POTENZA RE001 Adrenalin.

Adrenalin

– A collaborative Tokyo-Rome, Japanese-European effort

We chose Rome as the venue to introduce this new product.

Why? Because this was the birthplace of the POTENZA RE001 Adrenalin.

We have established four R&D centres and nine proving grounds at various locations around the world in order to handle all driving conditions, and to allow us to respond to the widely varying needs of drivers and vehicle manufacturers. Our R&D centre and proving ground in Rome is the base for our European development work.

The Adrenalin is the result of collaboration between Japan and Europe.

This collaboration began with product concept and target performance decisions, and extended from the start of development right through to track testing and evaluation. Bridgestone’s head office, R&D centre and proving ground in Japan worked closely with EUPG (Bridgestone European Proving Ground), the state-of-the-art tyre test facilities at Rome, and with the test drivers.

Opened in 2004, EUPG is the newest of all Bridgestone’s test facilities, with dedicated courses design ed for evaluating the performance of both tyres and vehicles, including an oval high-speed course over 4km long. This variety of courses fitted with the latest advanced equipment allows us to individually test the behaviour of each vehicle and the performance of each tyre. The ground is close to TCE (Technical Centre Europe), our main tyre R&D facility in Europe. The close link between the two lets us most effectively optimize our tyre design and development. Today, many of the major European auto manufacturers choose this track to test their new models. European auto manufacturers have the strictest tyre requirements in the world, and European consumers, living in a mature car-owning society, have a deep knowledge and interest in auto and tyre issues. In one of the world’s most competitive markets, EUPG supports Bridgestone’s tyre development as possibly the world’s most advanced car and tyre development facilities.

Development driver – Stefano Modena

Another major reason why we chose EUPG as the site to develop the Adrenalin was test driver Stefano Modena.

As an F1 driver in the late 80s and early 90s, he appeared on the victors’ podium in Monaco and Canada. Today, he is the most creative and enthusiastically committed member of the Bridgestone tyre development team working on projects at our most advanced test track.

We can say that the Adrenalin was perfected and refined based on the thinking and input of a driver who truly understands everything about how tyres work, thanks to his extensive experience in the world’s most demanding motor sport.

This is a man with a deep knowledge of just how dramatically a tyre can change a car’s performance, and who knows exactly what is required for a tyre to provide a sporty drive.

Adrenalin – Bringing new pleasure to sports driving

Our focus with this product was to create a tyre that can be used by anyone, on any car at any speed, that feels great on the street and provides a truly sporty drive.

Based on these objectives, Modena first determined what performance would be needed in the tyre. Development team members from Japan met with him here i n Rome repeatedly over the course of more than a year for discussions and tests.

When they think of a sports tyre, most people think of powerful grip and speedy response. And indeed, most sports tyres use those as their selling points.

The tyre we developed, based on Modena’s concept, aims to ensure real driving pleasure by going far beyond simple issues of powerful grip and speedy response.

Stability in all situations, precise, accurate but not over-sensitive response, how to exactly convey the condition of tyres and road surface to the driver through the steering wheel – these are the performance factors we concentrated on for the Adrenalin.

During the development of the Adrenalin, Modena made this comment: “What do you think are the most stable vehicles in the world? Racing cars.”

A race is a competition to see who can go fastest, with both car and driver pushed to their limits. If his car is stable under the most extreme conditions, the driver has an edge over his rivals allowing him to coolly make decisions and carry out required actions. At the extreme, it can give him the ability to take one action more than other drivers in the same situation.

And then of course, the Adrenalin also has the famed POTENZA high grip.

Until now, only those with superb driving skills could appreciate and enjoy the performance made possible by this high grip. The RE001 Adrenalin ensures precise handling in response to the smallest of steering movements, and gives a car great stability. This means that many more people can now drive closer to the limits of stability, accurately feeling the next action required as they steer. In addition, it has remarkably little noise and is very smooth for a sports tyre.

You don’t need a sports car to use this sports tyre. Whatever your car – even if you have a sedan or hatchback - if you want a sporty drive, then this is the tyre that will maximise your driving pleasure.

April 2007. The Adrenalin arrives

Malaysia, at launch the POTENZA RE001 Adrenalin will be available as a 35 to 55 series in 33 sizes, and we will continue to steadily expand the range of sizes.

The tyre will be launched simultaneously in Asia, China, Oceania, Near & Middle Eas t, Russia and Africa in early 2007. These are the countries that are now on the road to becoming mature car-owning societies. Drivers there are becoming more interested in automobiles, and from now on we will see a heightened interest in driving matters. The POTENZA series will introduce drivers there to the true pleasures of driving and spur their desire to experience more. Bridgestone is planning driving events in various countries as a way of giving as many drivers as possible the opportunity to experience just how pleasurable driving can be with the right tyres. This is our major objective – to make driving more of a pleasure for everyone.

2007.06 Grass Racing Autocross Championship Round 1 : Grass Racing Autocross Championship Round 1
3rd June 2007
Shah Alam Stadium Car Park, Selangor, Malaysia

Grass Racing Autosports also known as GRA is back! A total of 90 cars took center stage over the weekend to do some serious racing on the Shah Alam car parks. GRA with the collaboration of main sponsor BFGoodrich Tires, has been able put the new series together for 2007 to move grassroots motorsports into high gear.

The series this year would consist of a full championship consisting of 5 rounds to find the ultimate autocross champion. With the efforts of GRA with BFGoodrich Tires, it is possibly the only grassroot event that spans the highest number of entries for any single race car event. For 2007, GRA have also gained sponsorships from Redline Oils, Arospeed and Meguiars’ Automotive Detailing Products.

“We are really appreciative of the efforts and support by the various sponsors in funding the GRA Autocross Championship”, said Ian Khong, Clerk Of The Course for the event.

For 2007, a new format has been introduced whereby the novice and seasoned drivers have been split-up. The categories also known as the Grass Class and the Pro-Grass Class respectively will run differing layouts. Now with the categories split, novice drivers are able to compete on a more equal basis amongst other novices. The cars however, would still need to comply with certain safety requirements and modification restrictions.

GRA has also introduced a new category for automatic cars. Being grassroots, one should be able to race the car one drives to work. That is why GRA has become a favorite amongst enthusiast. “Racing should be fun, safe and affordable. Now with the new automatic category, we should be seeing some interesting results and ‘battles’ amongst the competitors!, explains Jiannin, Event Organizer of GRA.

Testimony of GRA’s quest in providing a real community based racing, they have a large following in their www.grassracingautosports.com website and forum. Ronald Sutardja, Managing Director of BFGoodrich Tires explains “ ..the feedback from the drivers and community has been great. That is why we are continuing in collaboration with GRA into making BFGoodrich Tires synonymous with grassroots motorsports in Malaysia”.

In the Pro-Grass class, the Lotus cars took all top three spots with Hisham Jahudi, Marcus Chye and Dominic Ang dominating all 3 positions in Overall and in the OD class. Ivan Khong followed in 4th Overall and Mickey Teoh in 5th Overall respectively. In 6th place, Christopher Chin piloting a Honda Civic, newly promoted driver from Novice class last year, was ahead of seasoned driver Soo Seng Kuan in 7th place also in another Civic. Julian Pang in his Team Redline Proton Wira only managed 8th Overall, ahead of many other faster cars in his class. The fastest driver of the day from the Grass Class was Jason Foo, piloting a Proton Satria GTI 1800cc.

GRA provides a new avenue for corporate partners to showcase their products and put it to the test with real avid drivers. Mr. Howard Goh, Managing Director of Redline Oils explains, “…grassroot motorsports allows us to introduce the various range of products that we have to offer ”. New to the sport of Autocrossing, “ ….we have always believed that fostering close ties through communities, automotive forums, car events will enable us to educate consumers in automotive detailing, and GRA is a good start for us”, explains Mr. Johan Wong, Sales & Marketing Manager for Meguiars’.

The long awaited GRA Autocross Championship is currently the only grassroot car event in the country. GRA consisting of only Ian and Jiannin has been able to grow the community tremendously. The organization being only a year old, is already making a mark amongst avid enthusiasts, and is setting the stage for bigger things to come. Lookout for Round 2 in July 2007.
