2009-Aug Asia Pacific Rally Championship (APRC) Round 5 : 15-16th August 2009
Kota Tinggi, Johor, Malaysia

Cody Crocker of the Motor Image Racing team won the FIA ASIA PACIFIC RALLY CHAMPIONSHIP (APRC) ANCOM Malaysian Rally 2009 (MR9) in 3hr 16min 22sec (provisional result) driving his Subaru Impreza WRX.

Crocker started Leg Two with a comfortable lead over team mate Emma Gilmour of New Zealand, who finished second in 3hr 27min 11sec making it 1,2 for Motor Image on the podium.

In third was Indonesian driver, Rifat Sungkar of the Pertamina Prima XP Rally Team who finished 14min 18sec behind Gilmour.

Katsu Taguchi of the MRF Tyres team bowed out of the race early in the day when he ditched his Mitsubishi Lancer Evo 10 in SS11 causing major structural damage and ending his chances of securing important Championship points.

With Taguchi out, Crocker cruised to a comfortable victory and scored maximum points which positions him strongly to take out the 2009 Championship. Crocker won the APRC the past three years.

“I am very happy just to have finished the race today. The SS were very demanding. We took the stages one at a time, kept our heads down and did the job. We kept to a pace that meant we didn’t allow any mistakes to creep in,” Crocker said.

India’s Gaurav Gill, Taguchi’s MRF Tyres team mate, who didn’t finish Leg One yesterday due to mechanical problems, pushed his Mitsubishi Lancer Evo 10 very hard today clocking the fastest times in four SS. Some say Gill could be the man to beat when the APRC is held in Indonesia in October. Gill won the Gudang Garam Indonesian Rally in 2008.

“I’ve wanted to push hard since I arrived in Malaysia,” Gill said. Earlier in the day I missed a few junctions and in SS10 I had brake problems, but once we changed our setup we managed to win a lot of Stages,” Gaurav said.

Malaysia’s Karamjit Singh had a better day in his Proton Satria Neo S2000 as he clocked more kilometers and got more comfortable with the car. “Today was good because we got to practice Slowly slowly we are getting faster, so hopefully by next Rally (Indonesia) the car will be right-hand drive and we’ll be much faster,” Karamjit said.

2009-Aug Merdeka Millennium Endurance (MME) : Starting from the seventh slot on the starting grid, car number 28 of Team Petronas Syntium made their way up to win the race completing 306 laps in twelve hours.

Driving a BMW Z4, drivers Tatsuya Kataoka, Manabu Orido and Johan Adzmi snatched the first place from their team mates Nobuteru Taniguchi, Masataka Yanagida and Fariqe Hairuman in car number 28 when they (car 28) had a puncture with less than 20 minutes left on the clock dropping to second place.

“It was a real honor to be able to race with the two experienced Super GT drivers (Tatsuya and Manabu) as they thought me a lot through the race,” said Johan, the youngest on the podium that night.

“Our strategy was to take it easy on the car and complete the race and that’s what we did and it pulled through for us.”

In third place for class was last year’s champion team Porsche Club Singapore Mok Weng Sun, Darryl Hayden O'Young and Craig George Baird who made a big comeback after starting the race from the last spot on the starting grid.

In class A1 team Fugazi Racing driven by Alex Yoong, Wira Dani and Faizal Zelman completed 284 in their Radical race car.

“this shows how reliable the Radical can be, although we had a bit of a starter problem when we pitted in to refuel but it was rectified with replacing the starter which only took eight minutes to do, thanks to my crew for that,” said Wira.

And finally in class A2 winner is team Type R racing headed by Wong Yew Choong, Soh Kee Koon and Lai Wee Sing finishing the race with 279 laps under their belt.

“Thanks to my team for preparing the car, it was reliable throughout the race, we didn’t have to worry about that factor at all throghout the race, wong said.

The race started with 46 cars, 15 in class O, 10 in class A1 and 19 in class A2. 17 cars did not finish the race with the last car completing only 140 laps in the 12 hour race.

2009-Apr Malaysian Rally Championship 2009 : 11th - 12th April 2009
Cyberjaya, Malaysia

The Malaysian Rally Championship 2009 season kicks off this weekend with a record number of entries for a first Round. 30 cars will line up for the flag-off in Cyberjaya including 15 newcomers and international teams from Hong Kong, India and Sri Lanka.

This is the first time the rally will be held in Cyberjaya giving spectators easy access to the rally action and one hundred percent (100%) visibility of the race.

Clerk of the Course for the Championship, Tengku Shaharin Abu Bakar Almarhum Tengku Suleiman said the venue is perfect for spectators. “The public can watch the official flag-off at CBD Perdana Complex Open Car Park, Cyberjaya and then literally cross the road to watch the action in the Stages.” He added, “There are no trees to block their view; it is an open area for all to see and experience the rally. The stages are more like a Super Special Stage.”

The Cyberjaya community is excited about the rally being in town. Busloads of university students from Lim Kok Wing will be watching keenly from the sidelines and twenty students from UNITEN Motorsports Department are volunteering as marshals for the event.

The track is expected to be rough and difficult to navigate because of the lack of landmarks, however the absence of trees and culverts eliminates the chance of crashes, which is a relief for the young newcomers who will compete in the Junior Championship category (previously known as the Clubmen category).

The Championship format has also changed to include a 2WD category for the first time. This gives drivers a chance to fight for Championship points without competing with the likes of current MRC Champion, Karamjit Singh who will continue to compete in his 4WD Mitsubishi Lancer Evo in the new 4WD only category.

“By offering the 2WD category we are leveling the playing field, so to speak,” said Tengku Shaharin. “A lot of drivers admit that they will never beat Karamjit in his 4WD, so this gives them the opportunity to compete against similar spec cars and have a crack at taking home a first place trophy.”

The 2009 Championship season will consist of five Rounds including the Asia Pacific Rally Championship Round to be held in Johor in August.
